Chagecha (チャゲチャ) is the first original series Yoshio Sawai created after Shinsetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. It contains much of the same style of humor as Sawai's previous works, though not quite as extreme as Bo-bobo. It's final chapter was published November 1, 2008, just two months after it began.
In the city of Gure-Tokyo, Yankees (delinquents) are running wild. With only 0.2% of teachers left in the schools and no one willing to stop them, these bad kids can do whatever they want whenever they want. And now, as tensions between the city and the delinquent populations are rising to such a degree that its even being called the “Gure-Tokyo Dispute”, they’re about to go down as legends…
But then, right out of know where, a mysterious man known as Chagecha arrives. His goal is to rid the city of Yankee control and stop this chaos once and for all.
After Shinsetsu Bo-bobo, Sawai wrote a short story for the Weekly Shonen Jump known as Black Owl (黒梟, Kuro Fukuro). This turned out to be be the beginning concepts of Chagecha, which started publication in the Weekly Shonen Jump on September 13, 2008.
In Chagecha, the city known as Gure-Tokyo is suffering a delinquent crisis. These delinquents (known as Yankees) have overthrown nearly all the school districts, essentially turning them into bases for their criminal gangs, and now have the city at their mercy. But these aren’t your normal hoodlums by any means… Yankees who have spent enough time living a life astray from society eventually develop powers known as "Yanki", and can use these at will.
When a man named Chagecha shows up possessing a powerful Yanki and begins putting some of the lowly yankees into place, word of his name begins to spread. He meets a kid named Masato, who has heard of his fights against the Yankees and wants to help him free the city of their control. After the stunning defeat of the infamous Guerrilla High, Masato firmly believes Chagecha could bring his school, Gekiatsu High, back to its former glory. Eventually, Masato takes Chagecha to Gekiatsu High when he meets the school's highest ranking members: Kawai Himawari, Washio Kouzan, Wakana Kotarou, Zenkaiten Doraji, Longhorn Onizawa, and the group leader Mysterious Tiger Mask. After testing his strength, they welcome Chagecha into the group. However, during Chagecha's welcoming party, they are attacked by Metro Sekiranun High, a high ranking and vicious Yankee School. They are challenged to a Rank Fight on a Yan-Battlefield, where the highest ranking members of two opposing schools battle it out to increase their school's rank. After a long and grueling fight, Gekiatsu High comes out victorious, bringing it from a gutter-grade school to a solid B-grade school. The final chapter ends with the news that, since Gekiatsu has become so known after the defeat of Metro Sekiranun, Yankee Schools all over Gure-Tokyo have sent letters wanting to challenge them. The final scene sees Chagecha and the rest walking with their backs to the audience, and judging by the silhouettes of four figures on the structure ahead of them, presumably on to their next challenge.
While the series was meant to go on much longer than it did, it was cut short due to poor ratings. The reception of Chagecha was mostly negative with many readers saying that it was either too similar to Bo-bobo, or that it was simply uninteresting. It seems that, after Shinsetsu Bo-bobo, the majority of Japanese Jump readers weren’t ready for another crazy series by Yoshio Sawai, and thus Weekly Shonen Jump quickly canceled it after it’s 8th chapter (which Sawai humorously wrote as the “∞th" chapter).
(暮東京)/Stray Tokyo: A large city that is overrun with delinquents. It has become wracked with crime and violence.
Yankee School Edit
(人間川流し): Schools that have become completely controlled by Yankees. They act more as gang headquarters than places of education.
(ヤン気ー): Powers that Yankees naturally develop when they have achieved a high rank and/or have spent enough time living a life astray from proper society. Yanki can be physically seen on subjects who have it, as it manifests itself as a glowing aura around the individual (the larger the aura, the stronger it is). Each person’s Yanki is different, from the way it is earned to how it is used, and even down to the color and smell.
Yan-Deadly Technique Edit
(ヤン必殺技): Special moves that are preformed using Yanki. Individuals who have Yanki can use these, and each one is different depending on the person and their skill level.
(極ヤン気ー): A fusion of two individuals Yan-Deadly Techniques which can only be used if both users recognize each other’s strength.
Ranks are earned by both individual students and schools. Ranking systems for both students and schools seem to run on similar scales; from Gutter-Grade to A-Grade. Student ranking is based on year and “Yanki skill level” (as opposed to academic strength), while school ranking is based on how many Rank Battles have been fought and won against.
Rank Battle Edit
(ランク戦): Yankee Schools need to participate in rank battles in order to achieve high ranks and become more recognized. This involves gathering the top members of each school participating in the 1v1 match, and fighting in an enclosed area known as a “Yan-Battlefield”. A Rank Battle is concluded when one team has defeated all the members on the other team.
Places where Rank Battles are fought. They are areas of the city enclosed by tall fencing, and are filled with hidden weapons participants can find and use during the fight.
Main Characters Edit
(チャゲチャ): The main character. He has red hair done in up in dread locks, scars on both sides of his nose, glasses, and wears a white suite and hat. He's a 3rd-year in highschool and former student of Gekiatsu High, and lives in a vending machine outside of a convenience store with a rent of ¥85,000. He has a innate sense of justice and has come back to the city of Gure-Tokyo after 2 years to rid it of the Yankees. The life he lives is one on the edge, often taking big risks that could easily land him dead, but his cool and collected personality allows him to keep going even in such situations. He also uses the element of surprise against his enemies, usually acting in unexpected ways to throw them off.
- Backfist of Sadness: Chagecha backhands an opponent with so much force, they are sent flying.
- Yan-Deadly Technique: Human Bike (人間自動二輪): Chagecha exerts pressure on his heart to push his physical ability to its maximum capacity. Just like his lifestyle, this move is incredibly risky to use as it requires life energy to preform.
- Yanki Release: Chagecha releases a burst of powerful aura that causes, damage to nearby opponents.
(マサト): A 1st year in Gekiatsu High who met Chagecha on the train, and the two decided to work together. He has blond, spiky hair similar to Heppokomaru’s from Bo-bobo, and wears a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and black pants. He admires Chagecha and considers him as a role model, even if some of the crazy stunts he pulls leaves him reeling with shock and confusion.
Kawai Himawari Edit
(河合ヒマワリ): A 1st year in Gekiatsu High and one of their strongest members. She has her ginger-colored hair in pigtails and wears the typical Japanese "sailor style" school girl uniform. She is incredibly cold and stubborn and doesn’t like to be helped by others. She especially doesn’t like Chagecha and was very reluctant about him joining their group in Gekiatsu High. However, she does care about him and all her friends, even though it doesn’t seem like it.
- Yan-Deadly Technique: Mach Series (マッハ系): Himawari can swing ball-and-chains (including the ball-and-chain strap on her phone) at the enemy with extreme force.
Washio Kouzan Edit
(鷲尾甲山): A 2nd year in Gekiatsu High and one of their strongest members. He has shaggy hair that hangs over his eyes, and wears a very similar outfit to Masato, but with a black shirt and the sleeves aren't rolled up. He has the most responsibility in the group even though he’s not the leader, and looks after everyone. He’s also the only who can stop Wakana Koutarou once he goes into Runaway Mode.
- Yan-Deadly Technique: Sword Series (剣系): Kouzan draws two fighting staves and slashes the opponent with them.
Mysterious Tiger Mask Edit
(なぞのタイガーマスク): A 108th year in Gekiatsu High, and the self appointed leader of the strongest members. He is a spherical orange creature with arms and legs who wears a tiger mask that covers most of his body. He looks more than a little similar to the character Don Patch from Bo-bobo, and Chagecha even becomes suspicious of this at one point.
Wakana Kotarou Edit
(若菜濃太郎): A 1st year in Gekiatsu High and one of their strongest members. He has short black hair and wears a black shirt and pants complete with a belt, and a mask on the side of his head. He was one of the Six Great Yankees in middle school.
- Runaway Mode (暴走モード): When he becomes angered, his eyes change color and he enters a state called "Runaway Mode”. While in Runaway Mode, Kotarou attacks anyone around him regardless of weather they are an ally or not. They only one who can stop him is Washio Kozan by chanting “nekojara” three times.
Zenkaiten Doraji Edit
(全開天ドラ次): A 1st year in Gekiatsu High and one of their strongest members. He has spiky green hair and wears a similar outfit to Masato's, only with two belts and straps on either side of his pants. He’s 9 years old and was in 3rd grade before being transferred to Gekiatsu because of his immense power. Despite having the power of an elite yankee, his lack of experience and self-centered attitude make him unable to use it at its fullest capacity, often failing spectacularly while trying to do so. He strikes a rivalry with Chagecha and is always trying to outdo him.
- Great Yanki Opening: Early Morning Hemorrhage Service: In an attempt to test Chagecha, Doraji tries to showcase the true power of his Yanki. He surrounds himself with a massive storm of energy, but is unable to sustain it and is launched skyward.
- Yan-Deadly Technique: Me-System (オレ系): Doraji summons a slot machine in his mind, and lets this determine his attack. The only attack that he preforms using this is called “Slots Cat Shamoji”, where he dons a cat costume and hits the enemy using three shamoji (しゃもじ), or rice paddles.
Longhorn Onizawa Edit
(ロングホーン鬼沢): A 1st year in Gekiatsu High and one of their "strongest members". He is a strange, horned, heart-shaped creature with a chiseled face and cannons on his back. He wears triangle shades and shoulder pads. Despite how serious he looks, he’s actually extremely cowardly. He runs away from every fight, often pleading for his friends to help him. Despite his inability to keep any sort of composure in heated situations, he still tries to help he friends out by using the cannons on his back to fire wet towels.
(ウサギサン, Usagi-san) A seemingly normal rabbit who goes to Gekiatsu High. It seems to have some sort of relation to Longhorn Onizawa, although it’s unknown as to what. Whenever Onizawa is in need of encouragement, or sometimes just because, it makes a statement about the nature and struggles of rabbits. Though, these often conflict with the cautious and herbivorous nature of actual rabbits, much to the confusion of others (especially Masato).
Yankee Schools Edit
Gekiatsu High Edit
Once one of the Four Great High Schools of Gure-Tokyo, it became a Gutter-Grade school and was constantly being pushed around. Gekiatsu High has had rough past; 2 years earlier, a war know as the Great Exploding Yankee War occurred, in which Gure Tokyo was thrown into total chaos as Yankee schools began clashing for territory and authority. Nannrei Saijukan High attacked Gekiatsu and rounded up all of the upperclassmen, they then threw them into the mouth of Mt. Fuji where they were baked alive. 1 year earlier, the leader of Gekiatsu’s only resistance was killed by Nannrei Saijukan’s president, Kabu Kintamarou. As of the end of the series, Gekiatsu High is now a B-Grade school.
